The Best Way to Dust Your Home

We’ve all been there. You are just going about your day when all of a sudden you notice it. The thick film of dust on your entertainment center. You investigate further only to find the same thing on your baseboards and your ceiling fan. That’s it! It’s time to dust. Here’s how to dust your home in the most efficient manner.

Change Your HVAC Filter First

How long has it been since you last changed your HVAC filter? If it has been longer than 6 months, now is a good time to replace it. It is generally recommended that you change your filters every 3-6 months. This is because as you run your system, the filter catches dust and detritus but once it gets full, that dust gets redistributed into your home through your registers. Thus resulting in more dust accumulation on your furniture and knick knacks.

Wash Your Linens

Textiles are prone to clinging on to dust, so before you get started doing the bulk of your dusting, take this opportunity to wash your linens. Remove pillowcases and take down curtains and throw them in the washing machine.

Start at the Ceiling

The smartest way to dust is to start at the ceiling and work your way down. That way, you are not doing more work than you need to. Grab a ladder or use an adjustable dusting pole to get to the ceiling fan and light fixtures.

To the Walls

Next, give attention to your walls and the things on them. Pictures, mirrors, and wall decor all hang on to dust in a major way. Take a damp cloth and swipe along the edges of all these items.

Chotchkies and Furniture

From there you can move onto furniture and knick knacks. Begin moving knick knacks, books, and trinkets from shelving and bric a brac. Dust them as you move them aside. Once shelving and furniture is cleared, dust the entirety of those surfaces with a microfiber cloth. For difficult to reach spaces as well as electronics, use canned air to clear dust away.

Finish Up with Floors

Once you have dusted from the top of your home down, all that’s left to do is tackle the floors. For this part, you can use a vacuum. Make sure to move furniture around and get underneath the pieces. If furniture is too heavy to move, you can utilize the long hose attachment on your vacuum to get the job done.
